REPRINT FROM THE WEBSITE FOR THE LEGAL AID SOCIETY
Kinds of Cases Legal Aid Society Takes
The help that the Legal Aid Society (LAS) can provide will depend on the kind of problem. They will always help you find some resources for help and advice, but don’t have lawyers to help with every case. A lawyer from Legal Aid Society or their Volunteer Lawyers Program may be able to represent you in the following kinds of cases:
- Reentry Screening
- Employment Cases
- Family and Domestic Violence Cases
- Health and Benefits Cases
- Housing Cases
- Money and Tax Cases
We also have Legal Help Booklets just below. They may be of some help for you with your legal problem.
If you want to talk to a lawyer for advice about your problem, you can come to a Free Legal Help Clinic. Click to see times and dates for legal advice.
You can also go on-line and ask a lawyer a question. Click here for TN Free Legal Answers.
Legal Aid Society only takes legal problems and cases that you yourself can’t go to jail for.
If you have a criminal case, you need to call the Public Defender’s office.
Legal Help Booklets
Their booklets tell you about your legal rights and legal problems you can solve yourself. Some of these booklets are about cases we take. Some are about cases we don’t take.
We only take cases where you yourself can’t go to jail.
If you have a criminal case, call the Public Defender’s office. Here is a list for all Public Defenders' offices in Tennessee. DOWNLOAD HERE

We take as many cases as we can. We are sorry we don’t have enough lawyers for everyone.
We still may be able to give you one-time legal advice. Or tell you where else you can get help.
Free Legal Help Clinics
Need FREE help from a lawyer on the spot? Come to one of our free legal help clinics. They are open to people with low income who have a legal problem. But we can’t help with criminal problems.
Legal Aid Society and the Volunteer Lawyers Program have a place for you to go to talk with a lawyer. The lawyer will give you advice about your problem. The help is free. But we can’t help with criminal cases. You don’t need an appointment unless it says you must call.
Have papers about your legal problems? Bring them. Someone will ask you about your legal problem. They will also ask about your income. But you don’t have to have a certain income to get advice. Then you will meet with a lawyer. How many people can talk to a lawyer depends on how many lawyers come AND how many people come.
