The County Highway Superintendent, Robert Dedrick, is the head of the Highway Department and has general control over the location, relocation, construction, reconstruction, repair and maintenance of the County road system.
To qualify for this position, the following criteria must be met:
COUNTY HIGHWAY CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER
- Basic qualifications of TCA 8-18-101; and
- Shall reside within the county. (TCA 8-48-101)
- Shall file affidavits and such other evidence as the Tennessee Highway Officials Certification Board shall require with the board not later than fourteen (14) days prior to the qualifying deadline for candidates in a popular election or, where the position is appointed, prior to appointment to the office. (TCA 54-7-104)
- A person shall have at least a high school diploma or GED and meet one of the following criteria:
- Be licensed to practice engineering in Tennessee; or
- Be a graduate of an accredited school of engineering, with at least 2 years’ experience in highway construction or maintenance; or
- Have a combination of education and experience equivalent to either of the above; or
- Have at least 4 years’ experience in a supervisory capacity in highway construction or maintenance. (TCA 54-7-104)
Additionally, the Superintendent determines the total number of employees, personnel policy and work hours. The Superintendent also supervises, controls, and is responsible for all the machinery, equipment, tools, supplies, and materials owned or used by the County in the construction, repair and maintenance of County roads and bridges.
A Road Committee composed of five Commissioners is elected by the County Legislative Body. This Committee works with the Highway Superintendent in developing priorities and makes recommendations on the Highway Department budget, County road list, and other matters which require approval of the County Legislative Body.
